How to Add Pinterest Button to Sharebar for WordPress

How to Add Pinterest to Sharebar Tutorial

I recently opened an Account with Pinterest and immediately I wanted to add a Pinterest button to my Sharebar.

But how?

It’s very easy. All you have to do is add a small chunk of code to your Sharebar settings.

Add New Button and Enter this Code into both the Big and Small Button Fields:

<code><a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/create/button/" class="pin-it-button" count-layout="vertical">Pin It</a>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://assets.pinterest.com/js/pinit.js"></script></code>

The Long Version

  • Settings >Sharebar >Add New Button
  • Name Your Pinterest Button
  • Enter the Code into the Big and Small button fields
  • Click the Add Button down at the bottom left
  • Be Sure that your new Pinterest Button is enabled
  • Enable your Pinterest Button
  • Click the Update Button at the bottom left

I’ve just signed up for PinInterest, I’ll give you a ‘pin it’, but at this stage I’m pretty sceptical about the site – guess I’ll have to explore PinInterest more to see if it looks valuable.

      Hey Sam,

I haven’t had much time to explore Pinterest too much, but it looks pretty cool. I’m hoping to upload some photos very soon.

      What are you skeptical about?

      Cheers.

Sceptical about spreading my time over yet another site, not sure if its worth it.
Hey I pressed the ‘pin it’ button, selected my category (so it connected to my account) however don’t think it added it and hasn’t effected your ‘pin it’ counter… Not sure if its working.

        • Cal January 31, 2012 at 3:55 pm #

Hmmm..I gave it a test drive and it seemed to be working. I’ll take a look at it, thanks.

Yeah, I know what you mean about spending more time on another site. There is a lot of hype surrounding Pinterest so it might not hurt to get a head start if it really takes off.

Hey just had another glance at Pinterest today and the emphasis on photos is pretty cool. Couldn’t find your account to follow though, what’s your name on it?

    • Cal February 2, 2012 at 4:35 am #

      Hey Sam,

it’s tical (Cal and iCal were taken, go figure). I’ve also added another Pinterest button at the top left, next to the YouTube, Twitter and RSS Feed icons.

Super helpful! Thank you, I’m gonna go try it! Pinterest has a lot of potential :)

    • Cal February 5, 2012 at 1:07 am #

Thanks Jason, glad I could help.

      Cheers.

This may have worked at one point, but no longer. It doesn’t let you select an image to Pin or even the current page URL. The one on your page doesn’t work either.

    • Cal February 25, 2012 at 9:08 pm #

Thanks Kane, I’ll look into it.

      Cheers.

    This doesn’t work for me.
I cut and pasted the code above but it doesn’t work.

    • Cal March 5, 2012 at 12:46 am #

      Hey Gary,

Sorry about that. It did work at one time. I will look into it and amend the post accordingly.

      Cheers.

Well that was easy! Thanks Cal for the good instructions and the code to add the Pin It button to my ShareBar!!

    • Cal March 5, 2012 at 8:53 pm #

You’re welcome Lynn. It seems like it works for some and not others. I hope it works for you.

      Cheers.

      • Lynn Brown March 6, 2012 at 1:35 am #

Oh you are right Cal, it doesn’t seem to work. You can click on the button in my post, it pops up the Pinterest screen to add the info, but there is no image. And I checked my board, it did not get pinned. That is a bummer. Wonder if there is part of code that is missing?

        • Cal March 15, 2012 at 8:00 pm #

          Hi Lynn,

Sorry about that. I will try to find a better solution.

          Cheers.

It “kinda” works…I think. It doesn’t look like it picks up an image from the page…I tested it on yours first. There appears to be a big white blank space where a counter bubble would be but even yours doesn’t seem to have one. Is that right?

    • Cal March 5, 2012 at 8:51 pm #

      No, I don’t think that’s right. I’m looking for a better way.

      Cheers.

    thanks

    • Cal March 17, 2012 at 1:54 am #

      Hey Leo,

Please make sure that it works as it works for some and not for others.

      Cheers.

        i wonder why?

        • Cal March 17, 2012 at 7:21 pm #

Yeah, not sure why. I’m still looking around for a solution.

  9. Cal March 17, 2012 at 10:59 pm #

I’m still looking for a solution to this. A temporary workaround is the Pinterest WordPress Plugin. It adds the Pinterest Button to your pages and posts. You can get it here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/pin-it-on-pinterest/

Thanks for the tip. It worked perfectly! Yours is the only tutorial I’ve seen that works so simply.

    • Cal March 18, 2012 at 8:09 pm #

      Hey Robert,

Make sure to give it a test run as some have reported that it does’t work. When I wrote the tutorial, it worked and I could select whatever image I liked to Pin. Now I just get a blank square.

I’m still looking for a solution but have not found one yet.

      Cheers.

    Cal:

I replaced the code you provided with the following code from the Pinterest website:

    And now it works perfectly!

P.S. I also run a travel website, one that deals largely with saving money for travel. We should do some guest post and/or link action!

    • Cal March 19, 2012 at 10:53 pm #

      Hey Robert,

Yeah, I tried that, but still have the same result.

Guest posting/links sound great. Shoot me an email and we’ll arrange something.

      Cheers!

I got the email that says I have been added to the waitlist, but I heard it could take months!! :( Is it true that if someone already belongs to the site that I can be added automatically? And if so can someone please add me so I am not waiting forever? I would really appreciate it! Thank you!!

    • Cal April 18, 2012 at 6:45 pm #

It doesn’t take months, maybe a 2 or 3 weeks at most.

      Cheers!

  15. Ferb April 20, 2012 at 3:15 pm #

Thank you for the instruction, but I see some people have the vertical button, do you know how to do it?

    • Cal April 22, 2012 at 5:26 am #

      Hey Ferb,

I’m not sure about that – sorry.
